What are the key qualities a company leader must have to be successful?

I believe it’s imperative that a leader’s personal core values align with those of the organization they lead. In addition, genuinely caring for the people they serve and those they work with is of utmost importance. A successful leader must have a passion for the organization’s mission and purpose, and incorporate teamwork, creativity, vision, and a willingness to make tough decisions and push the envelope within the right parameters.

What advice do you have for younger executives who want to run companies?

Surround yourself with people who are equally enthusiastic about the organization’s mission and purpose. Take time to connect with others throughout the entire company. Showing genuine care for the gifts each person contributes creates a stronger team and, ultimately, a thriving organization. It’s also important to remember that you must have balance in your life to lead well. Remain creative and take the time and energy to learn what your audience is looking for. This will require strategic but necessary changes to remain relevant in an ever-changing environment.

Describe a pivotal moment in your career.

Soon after launching my professional career, I visited several healthcare entities to learn about day-to-day operations and observe leadership roles. I noticed a negative tone and overall lack of passion for the work among the leaders. It was disappointing and caused me to question my direction.

Finally, on one visit I met a gentleman who reiterated how leadership roles could make a difference in the field, and shared the energy that comes from knowing you’re having a positive impact on the lives of those served. It was the reminder and encouragement I needed to keep moving forward.

I have since experienced situations that came with significant challenges and required me to focus on the positive impacts that can result from strong leadership. My interaction with that leader often comes to mind and has made an impact on my career to this day.

Fun facts about James:

  • Something you would be surprised to know about me is that I collect vintage political buttons.
  • I unwind by going on hikes, long walks, biking and playing tennis and pickleball.
  • An ideal weekend in Wichita would be biking along the Arkansas River, visiting the Great Plains Nature Center, Sedgwick County Zoo or Botanica, and having dinner at any one of the following local restaurants - Georges French Bistro, The Belmont, Vora or Chester’s Chophouse.
